Prince Albert compiles list of veterans and politicians for future street names

The City of P.A. has created a list of 14 names to be used for future streets, pending final approval from council.

Five of the names on the list represent politicians, including councillor and former mayor, Don Cody and current mayor, Greg Dionne.

Nine are veterans. Among them are men who served in WWII: Edwin G. Laird, Albert E. Gosselin, John Hall and Glenn Martin. Veterans George Sutherland and Loyd Smith were also included on the recommendation of the Royal Canadian Legion.

The first name on the list is Thomas Settee, a WWII veteran and community leader who founded the Thomas Settee Boxing Club. A council resolution from 2015 identified Settee’s name for priority use, and Guidinger confirmed the next street to be named in the city will be in his honour.

Amy Meadows, a Prince Albert native who joined the Women’s Army Corps in 1942 and rose to the rank of Sergeant is also slated to have a future street named after her.

Pending final approval from city council, the compilation will take the place of the current Street Name List which contains around 150 names.

“Seems like at least once or twice a year the list comes up for discussion,” Director of Planning and Development Services Craig Guidinger told paNOW.

“And what we’re trying to do is come up with a sort of short-term 10-12 names that we can use for the foreseeable future that everyone agrees upon.”

Guidinger estimates a new street is named in the city every 1-2 years.

The simplified list was created in consultation with the Royal Canadian Legion and the ANAVETS.
