Christmas Cheer

Countdown begins for Christmas Gospel Jamboree

Dec 13, 2019 | 5:00 PM

The sad reality this time of year is not every family can afford gifts or a big Christmas meal, but a small group of volunteers from the area are doing their part to spread a bit more cheer.

The third annual Christmas Gospel Jamboree has been scheduled to take place Christmas Day at Senator Allen Bird Memorial Gymnasium. Organizer Peter McCallum told paNOW he takes great satisfaction from volunteering his time.

“When I was young, I didnt have a place to stay so doing this came from my heart,” he said.

The free event runs from 1 p.m. to 11 p.m. and will include entertainment, a meal, gifts for the children, and even a visit from Santa himself. Last year the event attracted over 200 people.

“Some of [the parents] cried because they could not afford presents for their kids and here they are given gifts free,” McCallum said.

McCallum explained initiatives like this do require a lot of support, and both food and gifts donations are still needed. Donations can be made by contacting McCallum (306-922-8055), Ida Ratt (306-884-7000), Betty Sanderson (306-420-5668), or Gloria Naytowhow (306-980-0790).
