St. Mary High School music program holds fundraiser

École St. Mary High School music program was hoping to hit some fundraising high notes among Christmas shoppers Sunday.

Music Director, Kayleigh Skomorowski said the trade show was to help with any trips the program takes.

“To help offset the cost of bussing for our trips it’s probably the biggest group price tag as far as the things we do outside of the classroom,” she said. “So, this is just to keep the costs affordable and accessible for all students when it comes to band trips.”

She said every group in the school goes on a trip within the province each year. Every second year they alternate the travelling group.

“This year our choir is going to Calgary in February and last year our band went to Banff in April,” Skomorowski said.

On their trip they will be going to see a musical production of Dear Evan Hansen in Calgary as well as perform at some schools and participate in a workshop taught by a professional.

The high school trade show involved 26 different vendors. Some of them featured students, families, and local businesses. They also had two student entrepreneurs: one was selling dog treats she makes and the other was selling home made scrunchies.

“It’s been pretty good traffic, having the [live] entertainment I think has helped bring in people too,” she said.

The program is hoping this will be an annual event and something people can look forward to next Christmas.

Carter Alexander, emcee for the event, said he is looking forward to the trip.

“I think it’s one of the most fun things of it,” he said. “That and performing, you get to hang out with all your friends and this fundraiser helps us out a lot with it.”

“It can bring the costs way down,” Alexander added. “I think it’ll be a lot of fun.”
