Pleasant Prediction

Central Saskatchewan in for warmer than ordinary winter

Dec 3, 2019 | 12:54 PM

With a projected high of 0 C and mainly sunny skies, today seems like a perfect day to announce Environment Canada’s good news for Central Saskatchewan.

“Temperatures will be above-average for the next three months,” Meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada Terri Lang said.

Before Prince Albert residents sell their snowblowers and parkas, there are still bitter days ahead.

“That [prediction] doesn’t mean it’s not going to get cold, we know it’s going to be cold. It’s winter in Saskatchewan. It just means if you average everything over the three months, theoretically it should come out above-average temperatures,” Lang said.

Weather models project a nice start meteorological winter (Dec. 1 to Feb. 29).

“The forecasters do believe that December will be quite warm,” Lang said.

Factors that help Environment Canada make their projections include; ocean currents, temperatures in the arctic and how they affect the jet stream.

Ontario, Quebec and the arctic are expected to see the highest probability of being warmer than normal when compared to the rest of the country.

With not as much confidence, Lang also predicted the balmy temperatures could be accompanied by more precipitation for Central Saskatchewan.

“It’s not as clear, [but] it’s showing a higher probability of above-average precipitation,” she noted.
