Agriculture Roundup

Agriculture Roundup for Monday November 25, 2019

Nov 25, 2019 | 9:00 AM

Canadian Western Agribition opens this morning with a long-standing tradition.

Saskatchewan agriculture minister David Marit has been given the honour of Burning the Brand which kicks off the six-day event.

Federal agriculture minister Marie-Claud Bibeau will also be in attendance.

The Canadian National 4-H and youth judging competition, Texas Longhorn show and the auctioneer competition are just some of the highlights.

Attendance is expected to surpass 120,000.

The National Farmers Union (NFU) called on CN Rail to get back to the bargaining table and negotiate an agreement in good faith that will ensure railway workers have safe working conditions.

NFU said farmers rely on rail transportation to carry products to export markets but to move grain, conductors, trainpersons and yard workers should not have to put their lives and health in danger.

NFU said they wanted grain to move but it must be done in a safe manner.

Many of the province’s businesses and agriculture leaders gathered last week to listen to broadcaster, author and political commentator Rex Murphy.

He discussed Canadian political challenges and opportunities facing modern business in the current environment.

Murphy said problems closer to the center of the country receive disproportionately more attention than other areas and it was the energy, forestry and agriculture industries that have built Canada into the prosperous country it is today.

The event was organized by the Saskatoon’s Business Association and Farm and Food Care Saskatchewan.
