Nightmare start ends in a frustrating finish in Medicine Hat for the Raiders

Nov 24, 2019 | 12:25 AM

Saturday’s contest started out as an absolute nightmare for the Prince Albert Raiders. They appeared to wake up and find a glimmer of hope, only for that to be taken away in the third period as they went on to lose 4-2 to the Medicine Hat Tigers.

The loss snaps a three-game winning streak for the Raiders. It also wraps up their three-game Alberta road swing, as they won the previous two games on it (7-1 against Red Deer on Wednesday and 5-3 over the Lethbridge Hurricanes on Friday).

Raiders goaltender Boston Bilous will try to forget about this one as soon as humanly possible.

Just over six minutes into the game, Bilous went behind his net to field a dump in and lost his balance as he came back to his crease. Tigers rookie Cole Sillinger was able to fire the puck in before Bilous was able to get back and give the Tigers an early lead.

Then 36 seconds later, Jonathan Brinkman score on an innocent looking shot from a bad angle and just like that, the Tigers led 2-0 and Bilous’ night was done. He let in two goals on five shots, and was replaced after a start for the second time this season.

But the Raiders were able to get back in it and appear to put the start behind them.

Remy Aquilon gave his team a spark as he scored his first WHL career goal in his 82nd career game to get his team back in it. Aquilon went scoreless in 57 games with the Victoria Royals in the past two seasons, and got his first in 25 with the Raiders this year.

Then Mr. Moe-vember himself Spencer Moe got his 10th goal of the season to tie it up after 40 minutes.

The Raiders started to get frustrated in the third period as they had a partial rush, but Raider forward Brayden Watts ran into the linesman and lost his momentum. The Tigers fired down the other way on a 3-on-2 rush themselves and Brett Kemp scored the winner.

As the Raiders chased that goal, they got an extra penalty during a fight between Jeremy Masella and Tigers captain James Hamblin. The Tigers got a goal from Corson Hopwo to seal the game at 4-2.
