Bears lose special teams battle to underdogs from ND

Nov 23, 2019 | 7:07 PM

Penalties and their lack of killing them off ultimately led to the first Prince Albert Northern Bears loss on home ice this season. The Bears were just 1-4 on their penalty kill and lost 4-3 to the Notre Dame Hounds Saturday at the Art Hauser Centre.

The three power play goals against and four goals conceded are both season highs for the Bears so far this year.

The defeat is just the Bears’ second on the season in nine games (five regulation wins, two overtime wins), while the Hounds pick up their fourth win of the year (third in regulation).

The Hounds took a 2-0 lead with a pair of power play goals. Kaitlyn Severson jammed the net and one-timed one in to score the lone goal in the first period. Madison Rutz’s point shot made it 2-0 four minutes into the second period.

The Bears got back into the game with a power play of their own, when McKenzie Mayo’s wrist shot from the point found a way into the top corner past a very well screen Hounds goaltender Eva Flilippova.

The Bears tied it up early in the third period shortly after their power play to start the frame had expired. After a scramble around the Hounds net, the puck squirted out to the line to Paige Dawson, who powered one in with a slap shot.

Ryann Perrett scored the Hounds’ third and final power play goal, potting home a rebound in front of the net to put the Hounds up 3-2 with 3:56 remaining. Annemarie Niedermier added the eventual game winning exactly a minute later on a wraparound.

Bears rookie Kiana Stewart scored with 17.4 seconds left for the Bears when they pulled the goaltender for the extra attacker, but it was too little too late.

The Bears and Hounds will have a rematch on Sunday at 1 p.m.
