The Prince Albert Barveenok Ukrainian Dancers are hosting their annual event this Saturday at the Prince Albert Exhibition Centre.

Obzhynky, or Fall Festival, is a major fundraiser for the Barveenok Ukrainian Dancers club and will feature a night of entertainment. Some other entertainment includes performances from the Pavlychenko Folklorique Ensemble from Saskatoon and the band Misdeal will perform.

Jason Vogelgesang, chairperson for the event, said they are going into the 35th annual year. He said there will also be a silent auction, a Ukrainian style feast, and a balloon drop. They will also have a children’s wagon and a wheel barrel full of liquor they will give away.

He said the food will include the traditional perogies and cabbage rolls as well as other regular food.

“The food is amazing, it’s pretty much a Ukrainian wedding style event minus the bridal party,” said Vogelgesang.

He said the infamous balloon drop will take place after all the performances are over at the end of the night.

“I don’t know how this originated, it’s just a tradition that was brought in,” he said. “Old and the young alike seem to quite enjoy taking part in it anyway.”

Vogelgesang the event is a way for the dancers to showcase what they have learned and practiced.

“Some of their ancestors might come from certain regions of Ukraine so they get some familiarity that way,” he said. “Just a way of giving back to our supporters whether they’re businesses and just a way to be thankful for all the support we get from Prince Albert and surrounding area.”

Vogelgesang said they still have tickets available and they can be purchased at the door. The doors will open at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday where they will serve the meal followed by the entertainment starting at 7:30 p.m.
