Carbon monoxide incidents act as warning for P.A residents

A couple of weekend callouts have prompted Parkland Ambulance to issue a cautionary warning.

“This weekend we responded as paramedics to a couple of carbon monoxide alarms going off,” Parkland Ambulance Director of Public Affairs Lyle Karasiuk said.

He explained to paNOW in these incidents no was harmed by the odourless and tasteless gas because they took steps to prepare their homes.

“Good for these folks, going out to a local store and buying a carbon monoxide detector and using one safely,” Karasiuk said.

He noted had these families not been more prepared, the consequences could have been much more tragic.

“It has the ability to make you quite sleepy, so often they’ll just go to sleep and sadly they just never wake up,” Karasiuk said.

He added residents should have working detectors on every level of their homes. If you live in an apartment building, ensure that your unit is also equipped.

Knowing the signs can also help mitigate potential disaster.

“All of a sudden if you recognize after being in your home for several hours, or whatever length of time, headaches, dizziness, blurred vision, nauseated feeling. It’s not necessarily that you’re coming down with the flu. It could be carbon monoxide,” Karasiuk said.

Karasiuk also encouraged residents to reach out to their local furnace maintenance companies to have a look at their units before winter sets in.
