Raiders win the beasts of the East division matchup

Tuesday’s game was a battle of the two Western Hockey League titans, and the Prince Albert Raiders won it decisively.

They handed the Edmonton Oil Kings a rare regulation defeat, doubling them up with a 6-3 victory at Rogers Place in downtown Edmonton.

The loss was just the Oil Kings’ second regulation loss of the season, with the only other one coming back on Sept. 29 against the Lethbridge Hurricanes.

Both teams now have identical records at 12-2-3 to start the year.

The Raiders surrendered the first goal by taking a penalty 200 feet from their own net, and Matthew Robertson scored on a one-timer to kick off the game for the home side.

But the Raiders went on to score five consecutive goals by the middle of the second period to run away with the game.

Ozzy Wiesblatt, the crazy train himself, also scored a pair of goals and added an assist. Wiesblatt has a five-game point streak alive, with three goals and nine points. He was awarded the game’s first star.

Spencer Moe continues his hot streak. He scored two goals and an assist in the victory, and now has five goals and eight points in just his last three games. He was the game’s second star.

Brayden Watts had a four-point night for the first time in his 269-game WHL career, scoring a goal and adding three assists. Watts now has three goals and 10 points in his last five games.

Boston Bilous made 17 saves on 20 shots for his 10th win of the season, which ties him for the WHL league lead with Portland Winterhawks’ goaltender Joel Hofer.

Don’t forget the P.A. kid

Prince Albert’s Riley Sawchuk added two assists for the Oil Kings in the losing effort. Sawchuk, who’s playing in his 20-year-old season with the Oil Kings, leads the team in both goals with nine and points with 23 through 17 games played.

Allan seeing Red

Nolan Allan and Team Canada Red picked up their second win of the 2019 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge, defeating Finland 7-2 on Tuesday night in Swift Current.

Allan’s played in all three games for Canada Red thus far. They finish the group stages with a 2-1 record. The playoffs will begin on Thursday.
