A New Career Begins

“The real purpose of today is recognition”: Prince Albert’s newest lawyers introduced

Nov 3, 2019 | 12:00 PM

When Carla Dombowsky graduated from Carlton High School in 2008, she openly admits she never imagined that in more than ten years she’d be signing the Law Society of Saskatchewan’s registrar, formalizing her career as a lawyer.

Dombowsky was among a group of eight people on Friday introduced as new lawyers to the Court of Queen’s Bench, Prince Albert.

“It’s an honour and it’s an accomplishment. It’s something I’ve been looking forward to for a long time,” she explained. “It’s really special to be from Prince Albert and now working in Prince Albert as a lawyer.”

The ceremony Friday represented a proud tradition for people working in the law profession, and a number of local lawyers were in attendance to show their support. In his opening remarks, Justice G.A. Meschisnick acknowledged that when the law society was formed in 1907, there were 168 members. In 2018, the membership had grown to over 1,900.

“The real purpose of today is recognition,” he stated.

John Morrall , who welcomed the new lawyers on behalf of the Law Society of Saskatchewan, stressed that a career in law was rewarding, but also challenging. He encouraged the new group to never shy away from asking for help.

“You will all face stress, pressures and challenges that will at times seem overwhelming,” he said.

While Friday’s ceremony made their chosen profession official, many in the group have already been inside a courtroom, and have been working behind the scenes articling on cases. Everyone in the group was also required to make the long drive down to Regina to sign the law society roll.

Bonnie Reddekopp, who brought remarks on behalf of the Canadian Bar Association (CBA) Saskatchewan chapter, told the group they had earned the privilege to call themselves lawyers.

“Becoming a lawyer is just the beginning of your journey,” she cautioned. “Lawyers are in a very unique position to make a positive contribution to their community.”

The 2019 inductees are: Carla Dombowsky, Zachary Carter, Jeffrey Summach, Aaron Martens, Bryce Mock, Matthew Hopkins, Andréanne Dubé and Jonathan Foreman.
