Mintos drop second game after 8-game heater

Oct 19, 2019 | 9:31 PM

After their hot eight-game winning streak to start the season, the Prince Albert Mintos have found their first lull.

The Mintos dropped their second consecutive game, 2-1 to the Moose Jaw Warriors on Saturday at the Art Hauser Centre. They are still on top of the Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League standings with an 8-2 record.

Things got off to a rough start in the first period, as Evan Callaghan scored for the visiting Warriors (and no, not the WHL team), just 1:32 into the game, on just their second shot. The Mintos were able to put up 15 shots in the first period, but no goals to show for it.

The next goal didn’t come until 2:41 into the second period, when Gabe Klassen scored his ninth goal of the year in just his eighth game with the squad. That was the only goal of the second period, and the Mintos had the advantage in shots in the frame 12-6 (27-12 total).

Warriors centre Connor McGrath got the eventual game-winner in the third period. He slid a shot five-hole on Mintos goalie Spencer Welke to give Moose Jaw a 2-1 lead 4:26 into the final frame. The Mintos had racked up 39 shots by the end of the game compared to Moose Jaw’s 26, but they could only tally a single goal.

The Mintos’ next action is on Oct. 26 against the Notre Dame Hounds in Wilcox, and a rematch against the Warriors on Oct. 27 in Moose Jaw. Their next home game is on Nov. 2, when they host the Hounds at 7 p.m. at the Art Hauser Centre.
