Food bank looks to fill a bus

UPDATE: The Prince Albert Food Bank is announcing good news, confirming on Monday that 2,000 lbs of food and $410 in cash were raised by the Fill a Bus Campaign.

A city bus will deliver some assistance to the Prince Albert Food Bank this weekend.

On Saturday, the public is encouraged to help fill the bus that will be parked outside of Walmart with non-perishable food items.

“Right now we need pretty much everything but what we’d prefer to see is dried goods like pasta, oatmeal and rice,” Kerry Ramsdell, operations manager for the food bank said. “For canned goods we need soup, vegetables, tomato, fruit. Basically, anything we can throw into a hamper.”

The Prince Albert Food Bank distributes up to 1,000 hampers per month, which helps feed 3,000 people, and Ramsdell said there is a growing need.

“We seem to be getting new clients all the time,” she said.

The ‘Fill a Bus’ event is held in partnership with Saskatchewan Country CKBI radio, part of the Jim Pattison Broadcast Group. Local morning show hosts Chris Knight and Teena Monteleone will be on location from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday to help accept donations. In previous years, the event has brought in anywhere between 1,500 to 6,000 pounds of food and other items.

Ramsdell said the food bank also accepts cleaning supplies, hygiene products like shampoo or toothpaste and baby products like diapers.

“Any type of donation will be greatly appreciated,” she said.

Editor’s note: this article was amended to make clear the food bank distributes 1,000 hampers per month not 3,000 as originally reported.
