Fall Supper Fever

Ample number of fall suppers to binge on province wide

Your’ belt line may be straining from second and third helpings of Thanksgiving dinner, but that doesn’t mean you won’t be able to fit a couple more legs of turkey and slices of pumpkin pie onto your’ plate in the coming weeks.

Fall supper season is fully underway in the province.

“There is usually turkey, cabbage rolls, perogies … sometimes there’s two different kinds of cabbage rolls, sometimes there is meatballs,” Admin on Saskatchewan Fall Suppers Facebook page, Angelina Addie said. “There is always mashed potatoes and gravy, turnips and some type of dessert; usually pie or crisps.”

Fowl or beef, fall suppers are a favourite past time for many in the province.

Addie explained that churches, halls and community centres start serving up meals in September and usually by the middle of November they’re all wrapped up.

Typically, these food fundraisers raise money for building upgrades, community groups or even helping kids go on school trips according to Addie.

She indicated that the weekend after Thanksgiving tends to be the busiest, perhaps due to farming schedules.

“Harvest is probably done or close to being done (around that time), so the farmers will be able to go and enjoy the meal. Before that, they’re really working hard at making sure the crops are off before they go and have supper,” Addie said.

Many of these gatherings feed hundreds or thousands of people and according to Addie, it takes ‘an army of volunteers.’

“There needs to be someone to smash the potatoes and haul the turkeys. It’s interesting how the whole community can come together once a year and put on this huge feast for that many people, with no real idea how many people will be showing up,” she told paNOW. “I think that’s pretty cool, to know there is that many people out there willing to do this.”

Addie’s passion for fall suppers comes from fond memories spent going to them with her grandparents in Yorkton. When she was pregnant three years ago, she stumbled upon the Facebook group and was an avid participant, so much so she was made one of the admins.

“You can head to the Facebook group and join that. There you can see all the fall suppers and if you know of ones that aren’t there, you can add them because the more the better,” she added

According to her, there are over 70 suppers province wide still to be indulged in.
