Food bank replenishing after empty summer months

Sep 29, 2019 | 12:00 PM

After a busy summer that emptied the shelves at the Prince Albert Food Bank, they’re getting more donations.

Serving nearly 6,000 people in June and July the food bank was going through a crisis and were struggling to make food hampers.

Kim Scruby, Executive Director of the Prince Albert Food Bank, told paNOW the situation was not as bleak as it was in August,

“[It’s] better now we are getting a lot of garden produce in from folks emptying out their gardens for the summer,” Scruby told paNOW.

Even though they’re getting back on their feet Scruby said they can always use more donations.

“It’s fantastic how much is coming in but it’s going as fast as it comes in,” he said.

They’re receiving more perishable food items but it’s going out to families just as quickly.

Scruby said they were looking for any food items that are non-perishable such as pasta, rice, canned soup to name a few. Also, anything from the garden including crab apples and potatoes were in need.

“We’ll definitely take that too,” he said.

In August, Scruby said they put together 1,064 food hampers for close to 3,000 people.

Now that children have gone back to school Scruby said they will stay just as busy.

“With parents having to endure the costs of having to go back to school we’ll probably be on track to do about 1,050 to 1,100 hampers this month too,” he added. “It’s business as usual, and we’re getting a lot of support, but the need is always there.”
