RCMP investigate death at Candle Lake store

Sep 25, 2019 | 2:00 PM

A thick line of yellow police tape surrounds a popular business in the Resort Village of Candle Lake, and questions continue to swirl within the small community over what transpired early Monday afternoon.

RCMP have been tight lipped about their investigation so far but confirmed for paNOW on Wednesday, the body of a 55-year-old man was found at a residence near the store. The name of the deceased has not been released by the RCMP, and an autopsy was scheduled to take place Wednesday in Saskatoon to determine the cause of death.

paNOW has learned the victim was Tom “Buck” Borson, the store’s manager. Store Owner Gord Cowan said Borson had been working at the store for nearly two years and was well liked.

“He got under people’s skin every once in a while but he wasn’t the type of guy that would hold a grudge or anybody would have any reason to really dislike him,” Cowan said.

Cowan explained Borson had come to Candle Lake roughly 15 years ago and had earned the nickname “Buck – 17′ from his friends, due to his thin stature. Cowan said the whole community is shocked over what happened.

“It’s no secret that there has been a major crime scene investigation going on here since Monday at noon and it’s still ongoing right now. I’m sitting in the parking lot of the store because they still won’t release the store back to me,” he said.

Cowan said renovations were done at the store in 2017, and part of the renovations included the creation of an apartment at the back where Borson lived. Cowan explained Borson was famous for his morning breakfast specials, was at the store seven days a week during the busy summer months, and now will be sadly missed by everyone in the community.

“Buck was the type of guy that would do anything for anybody. If anybody needed help, Buck would show up,” Cowan said.

Candle Lake is located roughly 80 kilometres north of Prince Albert.
