Chisholm scores twice in 7 seconds, leads SMAAAHL in preseason scoring for Mintos

Sep 17, 2019 | 9:53 PM

Cooper Chisholm played 38 games last year and played in five playoff contests for the Prince Albert Mintos last near, but never scored a goal.

Chisholm made up for lost time on Tuesday, as it took him just seven seconds to score a pair of goals in the Mintos’ 5-3 pre-season victory over the Beardy’s Blackhawks. He even added an assist on the Mintos’ fifth goal as well.

“Just the thought of not scoring last year was in my mind all summer. Every time I was out on the ice, I was working on the hands in tight and shooting the puck. It was a lucky bounce, Bahmer [Ty Bahm] made a nice pass to me there and I put it away.”

That gives Chisholm six assists and nine points in four pre-season games for the Mintos, which leads the Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League in both categories. His three goals are tied for fourth.

As much as Chisholm is feasting during these preseason games, he said Saturday’s home opener against the Battlefords Stars can’t come soon enough.

“[My confidence] is really high, I just can’t wait to get going,” Chisholm said. “The team’s gelling really well, I don’t think I’d be doing as good as I am without the guys in that room.”

Before the preseason started, Chisholm skated with the Prince Albert Raiders at their training camp. That helped Chisholm in several ways, especially after talking to the Raiders’ scouts and coaches after the camp.

“I think that was a big boost to my confidence, hearing the positive feedback they had to tell me after the camp,” Chisholm said. “Getting some points and playing with some good players. It got me ready for Minto season.”

Some more help

The Mintos received some reinforcements this week, as Dawson Springer came back from the Swift Current Broncos, Chase Bertholet returned from the Winnipeg ICE, and Marek Schneider came back to his hometown after spending time with the Saskatoon Blades.

All three played in their first game of the preseason with the Mintos.

Last season, Springer finished second in team scoring with 28 goals and 46 points in 44 games. Bertholet wasn’t far behind with 44 points (13 goals) in 43 games. Schneider logged a lot of ice-time as a 15-year-old rookie defenceman and had nine assists.

Tre Cool

Tre Fouquette, the Mintos defenceman and Prince Albert Raiders 2019 fourth round draft choice, found out on Tuesday that he made another team.

Fouquette was named to the Team Saskatchewan Under-16 roster for the upcoming 2019 WHL Cup.

Also making the WHL Cup is Shellbrook’s Cole Tanchuk who played with the Prince Albert Venice House Pirates last season. Tanchuk is committed to playing with the Tisdale Trojans for this season.
