U of S gets big donation for P.A. campus

The University of Saskatchewan College of Dentistry has been given a donation of over $1 million, which will be going to the new campus in Prince Albert.

The gift is from Toronto based dentalcorp, which operates a network of clinics all over the country. According to the College of Dentistry, this contribution is the biggest one they have ever received.

The company’s president, Guy Amini said they were motivated to make the contribution due in large part to the goals the U of S school of dentistry has.

“The school themselves really have a dedicated mission to focus on access to care, with a particular spotlight on access to care for the Indigenous population,” he said.

Amini said improving access to dental care is something which the company feels is important and see as a major issue overall. He feels a new clinic located in P.A. will go a long way in helping to improve the situation while providing a good facility.

“A physical clinic that has new operatories, new equipment, new technology to be able to service that part of the province and in particular the Indigenous communities there who really do need oral care,” he said.

Along with helping to deal with issues of access, Amini said the company also believes in the importance of helping to train the next generation of dentists. He added given the position of the company, they believe it is important to give back while also building relationships with faculty and students.

“We want the brightest and the best minds from all the schools to be part of our network,” he said.

The new University of Saskatchewan Prince Albert Campus, which will be located at the Forestry Centre downtown is scheduled to open its doors to students in the fall of 2020. The university is set to host an official ground breaking at the site next Monday.
