Mintos’ homecoming party crashed by Stars

Sep 12, 2019 | 9:13 PM

After playing their first three preseason games on the road, the Prince Albert Mintos were looking forward to finally playing on home ice on Thursday. But their homecoming party was crashed by the Battlefords Stars, who skated away with a 4-1 victory at the Art Hauser Centre.

The Stars opened the scoring, as Noah Schindel rifled in a one-timer 7:42 into the contest.

Mintos defenceman Zane Florence, who’s originally from North Battleford, scored what would hold up as the lone Mintos’ goal 1:09 after to tie the game up. He joined the rush and one-timed a cross-crease pass from Ty Bahm to score his first of the preseason.

It was all Stars after that. Stars’ forward Nick Steciuk scored with just two seconds left in the second period to give the Stars a 2-1 advantage after 40 minutes. Jordan Grill got the insurance marker midway through the third period, before Colby Ralston scored on the empty net.

The Mintos played their first three games of the preseason on the road, losing the first two 5-0 to the Battlefords Stars on Sept. 7 and 3-2 to the Tisdale Trojans on Sept. 8. The Mintos picked up an 8-0 victory on Sept. 12 away in Beardy’s against the Blackhawks.

The Mintos have two more games on their preseason docket and are both at the Art Hauser Centre. They’ll play against the Blackhawks on Tuesday and the Blazers on Wednesday, before beginning the regular season Sept. 21 against the Stars at the Hauser.

Hauser updates

The Mintos played their preseason game without a proper scoreboard at centre ice, as the one that was there has been removed from the rink. The new scoreboard will go in at some point next week before the Prince Albert Raiders’ home opener on Sept. 20.
