Sep 11, 2019 | 12:00 PM

An event tonight at Carlton High School will shed some light on women in policing.

The information night will cover a number of topics including the application process, as well as the various sections of the police service including crime scene investigation and child protection.

Sgt. Travis Willie told paNOW potential applicants will have the opportunity to get some great information.

“Females have a huge role to play in the world of policing and this [event] is kind of unique as we are going to have several of our own officers there to speak about their own experiences,” he said.

Willie explained one of the biggest challenges in the past for female applicants has been the mandatory police officer physical abilities test (POPAT). At the event tonight, there will be a video shown on that, and potential applicants can meet the instructors who run the test.

“We’re going to be able to put them in contact with the right people to train for that if they are seriously considering applying,” Willie said

Currently 15 per cent of the sworn officers with the city’s police service are women. Willie said the event Wednesday night is part of their ongoing recruitment efforts but added having the genders represented equally is not the end goal.

“At the end of the day we are looking for the best people,” he said.

The event has been scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m. inside the lecture theatre at Carlton High School.
