Play Ball

Lanigan man goes to bat for Cuban children

For the past five years, Reg Greve and his wife have been packing ball gloves and baseballs in their suitcases when they go on vacation to Cuba.

The couple don’t play baseball themselves but they have noticed there are a lot of children in Cuba who do, and who are in dire need of equipment.

“Whenever we went there, we saw some Cuban kids trying to play ball and they had a tree branch and a halfway round stone,” Greve said.

After talking with a representative from Baseball Saskatchewan, Greve received more support for his cause, and currently has two medium sized horse trailers full of used equipment at his property. There’s an agency in Nova Scotia who could ship the equipment overseas, but Greve explained that just won’t work.

“It costs you way more to ship it from here to Nova Scotia than it’s probably worth,” he said.

Greve then looked around for a possible alternative. After speaking with some travel agencies, he was told they would help encourage Cuban bound travellers to pack along some of the equipment. Greve who admitted an extra 50-pound bag could add an additional $35 to travel costs, said he knows any effort will be appreciated.

“We’ve got people lined up that want to get their little guys and their little communities playing baseball again rather than doing what kids do when they’ve got nothing else to do,” he said.

Greve, who has become involved in other projects in Cuba such as teaching English, said he would most like to help the children who live in the rural areas. He said unlike the children in the more commonly known tourist areas, they don’t receive the same sorts of financial benefits.
