Stewart uses pep-talk from fellow competitor to rally and win Senior Men’s Northerns

On his way to winning the 2019 Senior Men’s Northerns Wednesday at Cooke Municipal Golf Course, Ron Stewart received some tough love but much needed advice from Martin Ring, a long-time friend and last year’s Northerns winner.

When Stewart was struggling a bit on the front night and didn’t convert on a very-makeable birdie on eight, Ring let him have it.

“He said he’d kick my ass if I didn’t make a birdie,” Stewart said while laughing. “Because I hit a close one, eight to 10 feet behind the hole, so I guess I kind of needed it.”

That’s all that Stewart needed to refocus and get his game back in order. Even after his rough start, Stewart went on to shoot a tournament-best 70 to win the Championship Flight with a two-day total of 145. The last time Stewart won the Bob Hemsworth Trophy was back in 2012.

“I didn’t have great expectations coming in. I just wanted to hit the ball and see what happened, and not get rattled by anything that occurred. It really fell into place today.”

Stewart is one of the most accomplished golfers in the history of Prince Albert, having been inducted into the Prince Albert Sports Hall of Fame and was recognized as a lifetime member during the Prince Albert Golf and Curling Club’s 50th anniversary.

Ring followed up last year’s championship with a fourth-place finish on Wednesday, at 149. Doug Kozak finished in second place at 147 while Bruce Ede was right behind him in third at 148.
