Woman accused of manslaughter requests psychiatric assessment
A bail hearing has been postponed for a woman accused of killing a man at the Eastview Trailer Court last month.
Before the hearing’s scheduled start Monday morning at Prince Albert Provincial Court, Lucinda Smith, who appeared via video from the Pinegrove Correctional Centre, asked the judge for a psychiatric assessment. The assessment will determine if Smith is fit to instruct a lawyer, and if she was suffering from a mental disorder at the time of the incident on July 28.
Stating it was very uncommon for a request of this nature to come from the accused at this stage of the court proceedings, Judge E. Kalenith agreed to Smith’s request. The bail hearing will now take place after the report is done which could take up to 60 days.
Kalenith informed Smith that her request meant she would have to stay in custody until the report’s completion. Smith said she understand and agreed with the decision. The court case was adjourned to Aug. 21 for further discussion on the timeline of the ordered assessment.
