Weather Wrap-up

Cool, wet summer to continue in August

Aug 2, 2019 | 1:35 PM

Despite Friday’s 30C heat, August’s weather outlook is rather damp.

This would follow a weather pattern in July that despite plough winds and torrential rain was quite pedestrian.

According to Environment Canada, Prince Albert fell just 1.5C below the 30-year-average temperature of 18C and was only seven millimeters shy of the 76.6 mm 30-year-average.

“Most days were just smaller amounts (of rain), but quite a few days with precipitation, which is quite normal for the middle of the prairies, in the middle of the summer,” Natalie Hassell, meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada.

She explained that August will follow a blueprint of July, slightly cooler temperatures, with a minimal drop off in severe weather activity.

“Parts of Saskatchewan, including where you are will probably see below-normal temperatures for the month of August,” Hassell explained. If we look at our statistics for lightning activity and thunderstorm in general, August is still a very busy time. It’s not the peak (time), which is July. It’s a very busy time nonetheless.”

A sustained drop in the mercury and average precipitation is a good omen for people worried about a flare up in the wildfire activity.

The so far slow wildfire season was aided and abetted by July’s weather.

“You’ve had a few hot days, but not very many,” Hassell said. “That certainly, I would assume, has helped the fire situation.”
