Aces clinch first in their pool, but only after dramatic extra-inning win

The Prince Albert Aces are a perfect 3-0 at the Under-16 A Girls Provincials at the Max Power Ball Park this weekend, and have clinched first place in their pool.

After a 14-1 victory over the Saskatoon Lasers and 14-2 win over the Lumsden Cubs on Friday, the Aces faced a much tougher game on Saturday afternoon against the Saskatoon Raiders.

In a game that looked like it was won by both sides, the Aces eventually picked up the 5-4 extra inning win in the bottom of the eighth.

Aces catcher Carnell Olsen looked like she was going to win the game herself in the bottom of the seventh inning. With the game tied at 2-2, she crushed one to the fence in right-centre field, but was thrown out at the plate. But Olsen would get another chance to end the game.

After Raiders shortstop Leah Wenkanf hit a two-run home run in the top eighth inning, the Raiders had a 4-2 lead. But the Aces picked up three in the bottom half of the inning, with Olsen driving in the winning run with another bomb to right-centre.

With the win, the Aces will avoid playing again on Saturday and will move on to play at 9 a.m. on Sunday. The winner of that will go straight to the finals at 4 p.m., the loser will head to the semifinals at 1:30 p.m.
