Weather Warning

Tornado Watch issued by Environment Canada

Jul 18, 2019 | 12:20 PM

Keep an eye on the sky this afternoon.

As rain clouds roll in, Environment Canada is warning there may be potential for supercell thunderstorms to form.

“These are the ones that are mostly likely to have tornadoes,” Natalie Hasell, meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada said.

The communities of Prince Albert, Shellbrook, Spiritwood, Duck Lake and their surrounding rural municipalities are currently under a tornado watch.

“This particular threat looks like it’ll be with you for the rest of the day,” Hasell said.

While it’s currently a watch, Hasell indicated conditions can change quickly.

“You need to be vigilant. Tornado warnings are sometimes ‘now casts,’ telling you about something that has already has happened,” Hasell explained.

Environment Canada’s website states that in the event of a tornado, find protection.

“Go indoors to a room on the lowest floor, away from outside walls and windows, such as a basement, bathroom, stairwell or interior closet. Leave mobile homes, vehicles, tents, trailers and other temporary or free-standing shelter, and move to a strong building if you can. As a last resort, lie in a low spot and protect your head from flying debris. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors,” the website stated.

The website also explained the threat for severe weather should end early this evening.
