The Prince Albert Aces are hosting the Under-16 A Girls Softball Provincials this weekend at Max Power Ball Parks, with a gold medal already in their back pockets.

The Aces are entering the provincials after winning their second straight Maclean-Ross Championship in the Girls Prairie Softball League—competing against clubs from big Alberta centres like Edmonton, Calgary and Red Deer.

“We use that league to get us ready for these provincials, we get a lot games out of it,” said Aces coach Devon Kolosa. “We missed one tournament but we still ended up with a 9-4 record and ended up winning it again this year. I think that really benefits our players, giving them playing time and learning situational play and getting better overall, each week.”

The backbone of the team can be found on the mound, but Kolosa said each aspect of the Aces’ game is solid.

“Definitely, we have some really great pitching on this team, that’s something we’ve had for the past couple years,” Kolosa said. “Just overall, we’ve been hitting fairly well this year too. The hitting is come along.

“And this group of girls have known each other for years, so to have that mesh helps out.”

Weekend passes will be available at the gate for $10.

Round robin play with the 11 teams around the province will be played on Friday and early afternoon Saturday. The playoffs will start on Saturday evening and will conclude with the finals on Sunday at 4 p.m.

Here’s the draw for the Aces.

Friday

Aces vs Saskatoon Lasers, PMP 1, 10:30 a.m.

Aces vs Lumsden Cubs, PMP 1, 7:30 p.m.

Saturday

Aces vs. Saskatoon Raiders, PMP2, 12:30 p.m.

Astros vs NZ

The Under-14 Astros will also be in action this week, playing a doubleheader against Team New Zealand at Max Power Ball Parks on Thursday starting at 6:30 p.m.
