P.A.’s Baker makes Western Canada Summer Games

Prince Albert’s T.J. Baker is sure glad the Western Canada Summer Games are in Swift Current this year.

Baker, who made Team Saskatchewan’s Under-17 golf team to compete in the games Aug. 16-18, has had some great success on the tournament hosting course of Elmwood Golf Club.

Back in 2017, Baker won the Under-15 Junior Order of Merit after finishing first in provincials at Elmwood.

“Going into it, I’m feeling pretty confident. I won the Under-15’s at the golf course we’re going to play, a couple years ago. I definitely have a good feeling about it,” Baker said.

“It’s definitely something special. It only happens so often.”

Baker also qualified for the summer games despite only competing in three of the seven qualifying events. His second place finish at provincials in his Under-17 age group (tied for seventh overall) was good to boost him into the top five and get him in a Green and Gold jacket.

“I just played some good golf. I didn’t get to go all the qualifiers for it, so I made up for it at provincials with all those Order of Merit points and getting a good placement,” Baker said.

Baker, 16, has had a golf club in his hand since he was a toddler. That should be no surprise considering his father is Tyler Baker, the general manager of the Waskesiu Golf Course.

“I used to go and hit balls when I was pretty close to three years old, but I really started playing when I was about four. It’s been around 12 years since I started playing,” Baker said. “My dad really got me into it. I love the competition and how hard it can be.”
