Flood Protection

SGI urges quick claims for flood damage

Heavy rainfall on the weekend may have had sump pumps working overtime.

If home owners did suffer flood damage they are encouraged to act quickly.

“Clean up that damage as soon as possible. Seek professional advice on how to clean up and take whatever reasonable steps you can to prevent further damage to your property,” Scott McGregor, communication consultant with SGI said. “Take many photographs and video of the damaged property so you can provide those to your adjuster, it’ll make the whole process a lot easier.”

McGregor noted it’s important to keep damaged items so your adjuster can see them. If you have to throw away items, take photos and keep a detailed list of what is being discarded.

“Before all, make sure you contact your insurance broker. It’ll start the process up and make the whole process go smoother,” McGregor said.

If you are cleaning up flood damage on your own, keep track of the hours you spend cleaning as well as any costs incurred during the cleanup.

While it’s encouraged McGregor admitted that some people might not be able to get flood protection.

“Contact your broker and talk about it with them,” he said. “Depending on flood plain maps and other factors that will kind of determine how much the flood coverage would cost.”
