Prince Albert receives torrential rainfall

Jul 15, 2019 | 12:03 PM

The rain fell fast and furious Sunday evening in the Prince Albert region.

Dense precipitation in a short period of time caused a few intersections, streets and parking lots to flood. The City’s Director of Public Works, Wes Hicks explained that’s not unexpected.

“Normally in a downpour of rain, when it comes down very heavily and quickly in a short period of time, the streets are designed to temporarily retain the water until the storm system can collect it and remove it from the streets,” Hicks said.

The rain fall amounts seemed to very depending on where your rain gauge was set-up.

“Last night I believe the airport recorded 12 mm of rain and up on the hill (on the south-side of) Prince Albert, some people are reporting as much as 26 mm of rain,” Hicks told paNOW.

Environment Canada confirmed 12.4 mm of rain fell at the P.A airport.

Prince Albert wasn’t the only community contending with the deluge.

A number of communities in the province including received substantial moisture Wynyard registered 46.8 mm, Spiritwood 33.1 mm, Meadow Lake 31.9 mm and Waskesiu recorded 20.8 mm.

It wasn’t all bad. There are a number of pictures emerging on social media of kids swimming in the streets and even a kayak churning up the water.
