Book bonanza for local school

A Prince Albert school was bursting with new books Thursday after securing an unexpectedly generous grant.

St. Michael Community School received $40,000 from Indigo Books’ Love of Reading Foundation after teacher Lori-Anne Stiglitz made a grant application earlier this year.

“Some of the resources were lacking or some of our very well-loved books showed wear,” she told paNOW. ”The students love reading and we wanted to provide them with the best quality books they want to read and can read.”

She said many hours were spent surveying the students on the types and genres they’d like to have.

The company told the school about their success a few weeks ago but it was kept a secret so a celebration could be planned where the initial new, glossy books were unwrapped yesterday.

“Every child in the school walked away with a beautiful new hard cover book,” Lorel Trumier, the Roman Catholic School Division director of education said. “We didn’t think we’d get such a big grant.”

Trumier said the school library collection will be greatly enhanced.

“After experiencing budget reductions this money will really support the students’ quality of exposure to books. We’ll be able to provide a higher quality such as hard cover instead of soft cover which last longer.”
