Controlled burn scheduled for city’s drainage channel

Apr 24, 2019 | 12:16 PM

A controlled burn will be taking place in the city’s drainage channel starting Wednesday.

The burn will start at Muzzy Drive and work through the channel to Sixth Avenue East from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday.

The burn is to clean out build-up in the channel and the weeds will be dry enough to make the burn effective.

“In the city, the conditions are acceptable to allow for a controlled burn today,” Deputy Fire Chief Corey Rodgers said. “We have the staff and equipment to complete the work and there is a small window of opportunity to get this done before the weeds turn green.”

Depending on the weather, the schedule could change. If you see smoke in the area during the time frame, Rodgers said to not be alarmed.

There is a fire ban currently in effect for properties north of the North Saskatchewan River. The ban does not impact properties south of the river.
