Local producer lines up 13th country music awards gig

This weekend’s 30th Saskatchewan Country Music Awards in Saskatoon will have a strong Prince Albert pulse beating backstage as well as upon it.

Paul Lomheim, the marketing coordinator for Northern Lights Casino, has been entrusted by the host committee to take care of what will be his 13th production of the musical spectacle. He’ll also be the stage manager for a gig that will feature no fewer than 19 performers over the course of two and a half hours Saturday night.

“I love it, and I don’t want to be put out to pasture yet,” the veteran musician and show producer told paNOW. “It’s very challenging. I had to get everyone of the nominee’s songs and decide which clips to use on all the videos, get their pictures and put together biographies for some of them.”

Lomheim said despite the stress of it all it’s worthwhile.

“You work so hard for such a short show and there is anxiety and you get nervous, but when it’s done you feel good, and at the end of the day you’re dealing with so many professionals who you know are going to pull through,” he said.

One of the biggest challenges for the event at TCU Place will be making sure everyone sounds their best. Lomheim said needs to make sure all 19 sound checks are done in the hours leading up to the 7:30 p.m. start. The stage will feature three video screens. The main back projector is the best in the province, he said.

Despite his focus on producing and stage managing a top class show Saturday for the live audience and live TV crews, Lomheim also has a keen and supportive eye on the talent from Prince Albert and area and hopes a few awards across 31 categories will be coming home.

“We have very good representation among the nominees with over 10 people from the region in the running for honours.”
