“Young Warrior” laid to rest

It was standing room only Wednesday at the CB building in downtown Prince Albert, as a young boy killed in a tragic incident last week was laid to rest.

The small casket carrying the body of Kelvin Jonathon McCallum III was surrounded by some of his favourite toys. Elder A.J. Felix thanked community members who came out to show their support for the families.

“It doesn’t matter what language we speak, it doesn’t matter what religion we follow, you came anyway and I want to thank you for that,” he said.

The emotional pain felt by the family and those in attendance was very visible on their faces. Felix tried his best to comfort the crowd and said Kelvin was in a good place now.

“I don’t know what happened but I do know the home he was in was not following a straight road,” he said.

The circumstances surrounding the young child’s death on March 20 remain unclear. At this stage, Kelvin McCallum Jr., who claims to be the boy’s father, has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the death.

Felix said there was no place in any home with children, for drugs or alcohol and he encouraged the parents in the room to think harder about their decisions, and put their children’s lives first.

“I know I might make a few people mad by saying that but by golly, I don’t want to see this,” Felix said as he pointed directly at the small, white casket.

Morris Gladue was also among the speakers and said there was never any excuse for parents to hit their children, adding the day will come when those children will understand what is happening and “resent us” for it.

Rev. Sam Halkett officiated the service Wednesday. In his closing remarks, he encouraged all the parents in the room to love their children with all their heart, and to go home and hug and kiss their children.
