P.A. Police to offer gun amnesty program

Mar 26, 2019 | 11:18 AM

While only 14 guns were turned in to police during last year’s amnesty program, the Prince Albert Police will again offer immunity for surrendered weapons this year.

Those looking to turn in unwanted or illegal firearms and ammunition can contact the police service. Members will attend your residence to safety transport and dispose of the weapon.

If you are surrendering a weapon, you are asked not to transport the weapon yourself.

The program started after the Regina Police Service successfully piloted it in 2017 and obtained 157 unwanted firearms.

While the impetus of the amnesty is to remove unwanted firearms from the province and those improperly stored in homes, there is a benefit to taking part. Police will not charge individuals with weapon-related criminal code offenses that would normally apply to possession of a surrendered weapon.

Sgt. Travis Willie said immunity from prosecution when those arrested are found to be in possession of a weapon. Immunity will not apply if the surrendered weapon has been used for a criminal purpose or obtained by a criminal act.

The program will run from March 25 to April 19.
