Local pharmacist recommends allergy relief as spring starts

For some, sure signs of spring are melting snow, birds singing and new growth for plants, but for others those signs are puffy eyes and a runny nose.

Tracy Price, the pharmacy manager of the Pharmasave on Central Avenue said there are a few seasonal allergy triggers when the weather warms.

“When the snow melts we do see allergies as a result of snow mold and leaves budding on the trees,” Price explained. “Lots of people who suffer seasonal allergies, it’s due to the actual change of season.”

She recommended that sufferers should check in with their local pharmacist to find a medication that best suits their lifestyle and current medication.

“There’s always drug interaction potential, so that’s a reason to check in,” Price said. “This is actually a good spot that pharmacists are well positioned to help the average person that’s coming into the store, looking for help with their season allergies.”

Daily life can be a struggle when constantly blowing your nose, but Price said it might be best to stay away from strong, short reaction allergy medications.

“For something like a seasonal allergy I would look to brands like Reactin or Claritin; they’re the longer acting formulations. They’re taken once a day, less side effects, less drowsiness, so they allow you to carry out your day-to-day activities without the drowsiness,” Price told paNOW.

Price said it’s best to get treatment if you have a seasonal allergy because it’s hard to avoid the potential triggers.
