Here are all 18 franchise records the Raiders broke this year

It was quite the regular season for the Prince Albert Raiders. They finished the 2018-19 season in first place in the Western Hockey League. The last time they accomplished that was their Memorial Cup-winning season 34 years ago.

Along the way to their banner regular season, the Raiders set a ridiculous 18 different franchise records this season. Yes, 18.

Before the Raiders get set for the Red Deer Rebels in the first round of the playoffs starting Friday and Saturday at the Art Hauser Centre, let’s take a trip down memory lane to see all the records the Raiders set this regular season.

Raiders’ goaltender Ian Scott set five franchise records himself, despite having a shortened season with representing Team Canada at the World Juniors, and missing five games to injury.

First and only Raiders’ goaltender to score a goal

Scott’s goal in the Raiders’ 3-1 win over the Tri-City Americans on Nov. 16 is the only goal scored by a Raiders’ net minder, and the eighth all-time in the Western Hockey League.

Count of ‘Monty’ Cristo

Nobody has played more games in a Raiders’ uniform than Sean Montgomery, and there’s a chance that nobody ever will.

On Saturday, Montgomery played in his 345^th game. Especially with the new reduction in games to 68, it will be nearly impossible mathematically for future players that play their entire careers in 68-game schedules to break it.

On Feb. 8 in his hometown, Montgomery played his 331^st game as his Raiders beat the Calgary Hitmen 8-2. That broke the record former Raider Brett Novak had held since 2006.

Three quick ones

Back on Sept. 30, Justin Nachbaur, Ozzy Wiesblatt and Parker Kelly all teamed up for the franchise record for the fastest three goals scored. They each scored a goal in a 16-second span, which is six seconds faster than the 22 seconds it took Wade Bucsis, Mike Modano and Pat Elyniuk to score back on Feb. 25, 1987.

Stingy D

The Raiders’ goaltending and defence was the best it’s ever been this year. They only surrendered 156 goals in 68 games, for just 2.29 per game. That breaks the 2003-04 Raiders, who surrendered 186 in 72 games, or 2.58 per game.

The Raiders also broke gave up 77 goals on home ice, beating the 86 from 2003-04, and 79 on the road, breaking the 2016-17 record of 86.

Their penalty kill was also the best it’s been. They gave up just 38 power play goals against, beating last year’s mark of 51. Although it’s not a team record, the Raiders scored 23 times shorthanded.

We’re going streaking!

The Raiders were able to string together some wins and were able to set five different team records in that regard.

They won 19 straight games from Oct. 8 to Dec. 1, setting marks in both consecutive wins and undefeated streak.

They also set marks in longest road wins in a row, and road undefeated streak with nine.

Not only that, but the Raiders started the year 26-1, which is by far their best start to any season they’ve had in team history.

Just 10

The Raiders lost the least amount of games this year, falling 10 times in regulation throughout the year. The Memorial Cup-winning team had the previous record, losing 11 times in the 1984-85 season (though in a 72-game season).

Staying out of the box

Despite having a few players with some snarl on their team (we’re looking at you captain Brayden Pachal and your 113 PIM’s), the Raiders spent just 806 minutes in the penalty box. That is 18 minutes less than the 824 they took in the 2013-2014 season.

Excluding affiliate players and goalies, Aliaksei Protas had the least amount of penalty minutes for the Raiders this season, with just four in 61 games. Montgomery had eight in his 67 games played.
