Raiders roll to third straight shutout over Broncos

Mar 10, 2019 | 8:10 PM

For the third straight game players had three points each for Prince Albert, and Ian Scott picked up his league-leading eighth shutout of the year, Sunday afternoon.

Parker Kelly and Brett Leason had three points apiece while Scott picked up his third shut out in a row. Scott’s shutout streak is now at 180 minutes, setting a new franchise mark for a consecutive shutout streak. The previous record of 128:32 was set by Craig Hordal in 1995.

Both teams had six opportunities on the man advantage, with the Raiders scoring once on six attempts and the Broncos failing to score on six power plays. The Raiders have now successfully killed 28 straight shorthanded situations.

Assistant coach Jeff Truitt acknowledged Scott as a calming factor behind the penalty kill, but also said the players in front of him have become a cohesive unit.

“A lot of our guys have gotten better and better with the structure and their reads, and as a penalty killer a huge thing is taking lanes away and reading certain situations. I think this group has all done a great job that way,” Truitt said.

Prince Albert led 1-0 after one period thanks to Brett Leason’s sixth shorthanded goal of the year, which ties him with Jake Elmer of the Lethbridge Hurricanes for the most league-wide. After failing to score in seven games, the Raider forward now has three goals in his last two outings.

Things opened up in the second as the Raiders outshot the Broncos 22-2, tagging four goals in the period.

“For us, we wanted to continue to build and not slow down and just keep things going at a high end here,” said Truitt.

“I thought our guys as the game went on really got some traction.”

The shot barrage continued in the third period as the Raiders held a 16-3 edge, but Broncos goaltender Riley Lamb only allowed one goal, off the stick of Parker Kelly.

Prince Albert saw a five minute power play in the final stanza as Tanner Nagel was called for a charging major following a big hit on Dante Hannoun that left the Raider forward down on the ice momentarily. He left the ice and would be sent to the dressing room for the remainder of the game. Truitt wasn’t able to provide any update on his condition postgame.

“He took the hit and [Athletic Therapist Duane Bartley] took a look at him. Sometimes it’s a wind thing, it could be anything, but at this point in time there’s no use rushing anything so we just sent him to the dressing room tonight,” said Truitt.

With the victory, the Raiders now have 53 wins on the year, moving them past the 1985-86 Raider team for second most in franchise history.

Forward Cole Fonstad was out of the lineup Sunday afternoon due to injury, and his timeline for return is considered as day-to-day.
