Mar 8, 2019 | 1:54 PM

RCMP are releasing more information about an incident on the Sturgeon Lake First Nation last weekend that led to the arrest of nearly a dozen people.

RCMP say 11 people were arrested following a report of a woman being assaulted and held against her will at a home on the First Nation. Police say the woman was able to escape out a window in the home and reported the assault to police on March 2.

The suspects tried to escape as police surrounded the home, some on foot and others in a stolen vehicle. RCMP say seven men and four women, including two young offenders, are facing a total of 36 charges in relation to the incident. The charges include aggravated assault, forcible confinement, possession of a prohibited weapon, possession of a weapon, possession of stolen property and participating in a criminal organization.

“We were able to respond very quickly, we received the information in a timely manner,” RCMP Cpl. Rob King told paNOW.

Those charged in relation to the incident range in age from 19 to 50 years old, all have made their first court appearances. Those charged are Jesse Eric Dillon, 27; Brandy Joy Felix, 26; Henry Joseph Felix, 50; Keely Shay Felix, 21; Noreen Joyce Felix, 50; Dwayne Joseph Highway, 27; Trina Marie Ann Ochuschayoo, 19; Chad James Walker, 25; Tyler Shane Yellowtail, 33. Two young offenders cannot be named.

RCMP thanked members of the public for their help in investigating the incident. Police said it takes cooperation from local residents to insure the safety of the community, adding that charges would not have been possible otherwise.

“Policing doesn’t happen in a vacuum,” King said. “There’s always other people involved, there’s always people that have an inkling of what’s going on or know what’s going on, and it’s very important those people actually get involved in order to insure the safety of their own community.”
