Youth showcase featured award-winning dancer

Feb 19, 2019 | 12:12 PM

An eclectic cast of young musicians, dancers, and singers assembled for a special show in Prince Albert last night, including a Grade 11 student from St. Mary High School.

Sean Overby was among the performers on stage for the Youth Extravaganza at the E.A. Rawlinson Centre. The event kicked off the second week of the Prince Albert Winter Festival. Overby has been dancing since he was three years old.

“It is just a great outlet that I think you need these day because there’s all these mental health issues and all the craziness and stress of life,” he said.

Last year at a competition in North Battleford, Overby was awarded most outstanding lyrical soloist among the 16-year-old dancers. Overby said he tried to get more of his friends involved in dance and even started a cheer squad at his school.

“That has got a lot more to do with dance so I’ve gotten a lot of those people involved with dance but it’s tough to get into later on; you’ve got to start young,” he said.

Other acts on stage Monday night were the Vincent Massey Public School Choir; the Barveenok Ukranian Dancers, the Ecole St. Mary High School Jazz Band, and the Kerri English fiddlers. The show starts at 7 p.m. and tickets are $15 at the door.
