Prairie Women on Snowmobiles arrive in Prince Albert

A recent string of freezing temperatures couldn’t stop the Prairie Women on Snowmobiles from riding into Prince Albert on schedule yesterday.

The group of 10 women rode across Saskatchewan on a six-day journey to raise awareness for breast cancer and funds for equipment and research.

This year’s ride began in Meadow Lake and included stops in communities like Maple Creek and Swift Current before arriving in Prince Albert around 5 p.m. yesterday.

Over the last 18 years, the non-profit organization Prairie Women on Snowmobiles has raised more than $2.5 million for the Canadian Cancer Society and over $300,000 for the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency.

Brittany Fox rode in this year’s cross-province journey, and said that although it was a brisk journey, it was well worth it.

“Honestly finishing our last day I wouldn’t have wanted to ride in to town in the van,” said Fox.

“It was great to be able to come in and ride down on our sleds. Words can’t even explain it, it’s emotional, and its very rewarding, and it’s a once in a lifetime experience.”

To qualify, each rider had to raise a minimum of $3,000, own a snowmobile and raise awareness as they speak at each stop.

Those who want to donate can do so in person at each stop or through the website www.prairiewomenonsnowmobiles.ca.

Money donated through the website goes toward research through the Canadian Cancer Society.
