Local philanthropist up for national award

A Prince Albert woman who donated countless hours to local and international fundraising efforts, was named as one of six finalists for a national award.

Pat Weir will attend the 2018 Women in Wealth Management awards next month in Toronto. She was nominated in the category of Excellence in Philanthropy.

“I look at my life and I’ve been pretty blessed in my life. You know I was able to get a good education and had support from my parents and my family, and you know I love to give back,” she said.

Through her business at the Lawton Partners Wealth Management group, Weir supported local projects including Cosmo Lodge at Little Red River Park, the E.A. Rawlinson Centre and the Alfred Jenkins Fieldhouse. Weir also helped start the Prince Albert Scholarship Trust Fund to assist youth who have a desire to help in their community.

“They are not winning academic scholarships but they are volunteering at the hospital, or they are volunteering with Brownies, and are learning young what it’s like to give back to your community,” she said.

Over the past 11 years, Weir was heavily involved with the Global Neighbours group, which has done a lot of humanitarian work at the Burma and Thailand border including the construction of a hospital and schools. Weir herself went overseas to see the impact of the work, and meet the people in need of assistance.

“The peope are wonderful but when I get home, I kiss my Canadian passport and I kiss the ground because we are so fortunate,” she said.

The award ceremony will take place Nov. 21 at the Beanfield Centre.
