Fonstad joins Team Canada for U18 World Championship
A Prince Albert Raider has been selected to join Team Canada at the U18 World Championship in Russia.
Cole Fonstad was the sole Prince Albert player selected for Team Canada, and will join them at their practice sessions in Etobicoke, Ont. Before heading to Russia for two pre-tournament games. The championships themselves will be held April 19-29 in Chelyabinsk and Magnitogorsk, Russia.
Fonstad, a 17-year-old Estevan product, recently forced a seventh game in the Raiders’ playoff series against the Moose Jaw Warriors when he scored twice in game six. The young prospect was also ranked 78th among North American skaters in this summer’s NHL draft back in January.
“I just tried to stay consistent throughout the year and just improve every day, come to the rink with a good attitude and work hard. I knew that one day my opportunity would come if I keep up a good attitude and stay positive and just control what I can control,” Fonstad said in a media release today. “I haven’t really got a chance to represent Canada before, so it’s a new opportunity for me and I’m really excited.”
