Man released in connection with alleged weekend assault

The man charged with assault in connection with a violent incident outside Parkland Community Hall over the weekend was released from custody this morning.

Jason C. LePage was released following a court appearance Tuesday morning. LePage, 41, was charged with two counts of assault with a weapon and one count of assault after an alleged incident Sunday evening outside the community hall on the city’s west end. LePage was ordered to abide by several conditions while waiting to answer the charges, including a 24-hour curfew. He was scheduled to be back in court April 9.

Pastor Rick Martin, from the New Hope Community Church in Prince Albert, attended LePage’s court appearance Tuesday morning. Martin said he is good friends with the alleged victims in the case and was asked to attend on their behalf. Martin said the couple was left badly shaken by the alleged assault.

“They said it happened so fast, they didn’t even hardly have time to react,” Martin told paNOW outside court Tuesday.

The charges stemmed from an alleged road rage incident which occurred just after 6 p.m. Sunday. The Prince Albert Police Service said a man driving a van followed a couple as they drove to the hall, driving aggressively and honking his horn. Police said the man then got out of his vehicle in the parking lot and began hitting the victim in the face before a bystander “intervened with a shovel,” and the suspect fled.

On Monday, the alleged victims Tim and Carol Dyck told paNOW they suffered cuts and bruises during the altercation. Wilf Savisky, who allegedly chased away the attacker, told paNOW he has bruises on his hand and arm. Although the gospel show Tim was set to perform in Sunday had to be cancelled, Martin said the church will continue to hold the events.

“I think the whole community is shaken up when something like this happens,” Martin said. “A lot of people are shook up, but we are going to proceed ahead with these gospel events and do our very best to create a safe environment where everybody can enjoy a good time.”
