Shovel-wielding Good Samaritan stops road rage incident: Police

A bystander with a shovel helped bring a road rage incident to an end over the weekend, according to Prince Albert Police.

Police said the victim was followed by a van while driving up the West Hill Sunday evening. The driver of the van was honking and driving aggressively, police said, and followed the victim into the parking lot of Parkland Hall when he pulled over to let the van pass.

The driver of the van approached the victim and struck him in the face, police said, but a nearby bystander “intervened with a shovel,” leading the suspect to flee. The victim was taken to hospital as a precaution.

Police interviewed several witnesses, who provided a plate number for the van. Officers tracked the vehicle to a 12th St. W. address where they arrested the 41-year-old suspect, who was charged with assault. He was scheduled to make his first court appearance this morning.

Over the weekend, which saw 233 calls for service, Prince Albert officers also arrested an 18-year-old who allegedly threatened a man with a knife while stealing from his vehicle.

Police said the victim was awoken early Sunday morning by his car alarm and spotted a man going through his vehicle. The victim approached the suspect, police said, and the suspect threatened him with a knife and fled. Undeterred, the victim followed the suspect on foot until police arrived and made the arrest.

The suspect was found to be carrying sunglasses and a speaker which were stolen from the victim’s vehicle, police said, and admitted to disposing of the knife in an alley. The 18-year-old suspect was charged with assault and theft. He was also scheduled to answer the charges this morning in Prince Albert Provincial Court.

Both suspects are presumed innocent at this stage.
