Two sports, two gold medals for Saskatoon athlete

Any athlete will tell you winning a gold medal is difficult, but winning two gold medals in two totally different sports is almost unheard of.

Just don’t tell Bella Brown that.

The 14-year-old from Saskatoon claimed her second gold medal of the Saskatchewan Winter Games on Friday afternoon when she and Team Saskatoon captured top honors in the Team Dual Mixed Wrestling competition at the Don Ross Centre defeating Team Regina.

On Monday, Brown captured gold in the 44 kg. Clean and Jerk competition in weightlifting and while there are a few similarities in the sports such as strength and teamwork she said they are polar opposites.

“When you’re weightlifting, you are out on the platform all alone,” Brown said. “But when you are wrestling your blood is pumping because you have your team cheering for you.”

Team Saskatoon’s matchup with Regina was a showdown. Brown said it was a very competitive matchup and both teams wanted to prove who was best.

“I’m very excited to be a part of this team and the fact that we won a gold medal too makes it more special,” she added. “The whole winter games have been a great experience for me.”

Friday afternoon also saw Team South West capture the bronze medal defeating Team South East.

As far as future aspirations go for Brown, she plans to continue training and participating in both sports as long as she can.

“I really love everything about competing and being part of a team,” she added. “You never know what roads lay ahead for me.”

The medals for the Team Dual Mixed competition will be handed out on Saturday followed by the Individual Wrestling finals at the Don Ross Centre.
