Canadian QB Brandon Bridge signs extension with Riders

The Saskatchewan Roughriders are keeping their Canadian quarterback in green and white.

The team announced a one-year contract extension with Brandon Bridge Wednesday.

“It actually feels good to know where I’m going to be at in the year 2018,” Bridge said, adding the agreement has been in the works for a while during the season.

“Chris Jones and I spoke on numerous occasions on how much he wanted me here and how he wanted to move forward and that was a big part of it.”

Both Bridge and his agent came to the agreement that one year would be the best situation for them because of the uncertainty around the current Collective Bargaining Agreement and the ratio.

Bridge said he wasn’t concerned about the fact the Riders don’t have a quarterbacks coach at this time, feeling he can work with anyone – including a familiar face.

“Kevin Glenn’s been around so maybe he can be the quarterback and the quarterback coach too,” Bridge joked, adding the veteran QB said he could lead the meetings.

The Toronto native with the nickname “Air Canada” stepped in for Glenn during several games this past season, leading the team to victory when he started against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on Sept. 15.

On that date, he became the first Canadian quarterback to throw for three touchdowns in a game since 1984.

It has been a busy off-season for Bridge, who also had a workout with the NFL’s New York Giants.

Bridge said the workout went well, however, the Giants want to see him play a full year as a starter.

“They obviously like the flashes of what I did this past season with Saskatchewan and they just want to see a full year starting and see if I can just keep on with that same trend as opposed to the highs and lows, so that was the main thing.”

Bridge also met with CFL Commissioner Randy Ambrosie Monday about the current rules surrounding the ratio.

“One of the main things he asked me was, ‘how did we get here? Why was the rule in this favour in the first place’ so he’s going to address that.”

Bridge said he and Ambrosie made some positive steps to helping pave the way for Canadian quarterbacks in the future.
