Highly touted teenage forward Ayo Akinola signs as Toronto FC homegrown player
Toronto FC has signed highly touted teenage forward Ayo Akinola, a U.S. under-17 international, as a homegrown player.
Akinola was a member of the American team that made it to the quarter-finals of the FIFA U-17 World Cup in India in October before losing 4-1 to eventual champion England. He went on trial with PSV Eindhoven in the Netherlands after the tournament.
The five-foot-10 182-pounder, who turns 18 in January, was born in Detroit but moved with his family to Ontario at a young age and now makes his home in suburban Brampton.
He is the 15th player in club history to sign for the first team from the Toronto FC academy. The club has signed a total of 34 Toronto FC academy players to professional contracts for Toronto FC, Toronto FC II and Toronto FC III.
