Accused in fatal crash remanded until Monday

Brandon Stucka has been remanded to custody in Saskatoon until his next appearance on Monday, October 2 in North Battleford. Stucka is facing several charges related to a fatal crash Sept. 22 near Lloydminster that killed three women.

He appeared via closed circuit video in North Battleford provincial court Thursday, but since his lawyer was not present in the courtroom, Stucka’s case was remanded to Oct. 2 at 11 a.m. 

Stucka, 26, from Lloydminster, has been charged with criminal negligence causing death, criminal negligence causing bodily harm, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm, failure to stop at the scene of an accident, flight from police, possession of property obtained by crime, and breach of undertaking.

A quiet, nervous-looking Stucka appeared from Saskatoon remand on Sept. 28. An agent spoke on Stucka’s lawyer’s behalf, with only a few people in the courtroom at the time. 

At about 3 a.m. on Friday Sept. 22, a heavy duty, flat-deck truck collided with a minivan in the eastbound lane on Highway 16.

Police were reported to have been pursuing the truck prior to the collision. Police determined the truck was stolen.

The crash happened after officers investigated three suspicious vehicles in the area and located them near the intersection of Highway 303 and Highway 16, at roughly 2:30 a.m. 

Before the crash, police attempted to pull over a three-quarter ton, heavy duty, flat deck truck, but the vehicle fled the scene. A pursuit was initiated, but according to a media release from the provincial division, members terminated the pursuit after directed by a supervisor.

As a result of the collision, Glorious Blamo, Eva Fatu Tumbay and Jeannette Wright were killed. They were well-known in the Edmonton Liberian community. A fourth woman, Janet Wright Gaye, was also seriously injured in the crash. She remains in critical condition in an Edmonton hospital.
