Raiders swept by weekend Warriors; lose another to injury

Sep 23, 2017 | 10:01 PM

The Moose Jaw Warriors are near the top of several preseason rankings sheets, and the Prince Albert Raiders found out why this weekend.

The Warriors swept the Raiders in the home-and-home series, 7-3 Saturday night at Mosaic Place in Moose Jaw, after a 3-0 decision Friday at the Art Hauser Centre.

Raiders goaltender Nicholas Sanders started the game in goal on Saturday and surrendered all seven goals on 30 shots, after starter Ian Scott left Friday’s game to a lower body injury. Before the game, Raiders head coach Marc Habscheid said that Scott would be shutdown for Saturday’s game and next weekend’s contests as well to recover.

Devon Skoleski joined Scott on the injury list, as the 20-year-old forward left the game in the second period with an upper body injury. Earlier on Saturday, Skoleski scored the Raiders’ first goal of the season, breaking a 74:59 scoreless drought to start the year against Warriors’ goaltender Brody Willms.

“He’s being evaluated right now,” Raiders associate coach Dave Manson said. “We’ll wait and see what the doctors say. They just got in to see him so we’ll wait the news, and hope it’s nothing serious so he can go Friday night.”

Although the Raiders started off the season with an 0-2 record, they’re relatively happy with their effort. The Raiders outshot the Warriors 24-4 in the third period as they tried to surge back into the game.

“It wasn’t a 7-3 game for sure,” Manson said. “We split the power plays but I thought we generated more chances with more offensive zone time. I thought Moose Jaw was opportunistic on some bounces that went their way. I thought overall, our guys played pretty well tonight.”
